Traveling Healthy on a Budget!

This week, my husband and I are going on a weekend trip. We had a bunch of airline points available so we figured why not? This past year, I’ve traveled a lot for work and I picked up a few tips on keeping a healthy routine while traveling!

Planning Before Your Trip
The best way to stay on track while traveling is PLANNING. I’m very meticulous when it comes to traveling since I’ve had to do it alone this past year. If you’re trying to keep a workout regimen, check out the hotel gym, does it have the machines you need or will you have to modify your workouts? I like to pack my resistance bands and a foam roller just in case.

Another one of my favorite things to do in terms of staying active is bringing my tablet along and doing workouts off YouTube! There’s so many free yoga and high intensity interval exercise videos on the site and most don’t require any equipment.

Eating Well Without Breaking The Bank
Meals and snacks are another thing. When I travel for work, I can expense my meals so I do try to pick healthier options. However, I pack snacks and DO NOT buy any on the airport. Everything at the airport and hotel will be WAY overpriced. When you’re packing for your trip, I would recommend packing snacks. Some of my favorite snacks to pack are nuts, fruit leather, and fresh fruit! Depending on whether you’re checking a bag or simply taking a carry on is where you can get creative. If you’re checking a bag, you can pack a travel blender. This way, you can pack fruits and simply pick up some milk or yogurt at your destination to enjoy smoothies.

If you’re simply traveling with a carry-on, food is still an option! I have cut and prepared fruit and veggies before a trip and packed it in zip lock bags. Unless you have liquids, security usually won’t bat an eye. It depends on the airport but I’ve never really had issues before. Sure sometimes they’ll look at you funny but who cares!

Making Good Choices

Maybe you don’t want to be super strict on your trip. That’s too fine but make sure to stay hydrated! I know it’s a pain when you have to go to the restroom a billion times can be a pain but your body will thank you. If you do indulge, staying hydrated will keep you from overeating and feeling uncomfortable.

One way I like to start my day is scoping out the hotel breakfast! I find that if I eat a well rounded breakfast I reach less for junk food later in the day. Try to have a protein with your breakfast to keep you satisfied longer
