Training for the DAV 5K
Happy Friday my friends! I hope you are having a lovely day and your week has been a good one. Work has been busy even though the weather has been wet and cold. I’ve been able to bring out my awesome Chicago Marathon rain jacket and I’ve worn it EVERYWHERE. I’m going to milk it for all it’s worth, haha! Well today I wanted to pop in with a bit of a training update and what’s next for me in the short run. I spoke about the Route 66 Half Marathon being my next big race. I should have put an asterisk next to that but I’ll explain below!

When I was training for the Chicago Marathon, I had recovery in mind. After every long run, I made sure that I was recovering well and had a routine down. Considering I was traveling, I went into detail and made sure I had everything I needed after the race. Prior to the race, I was feeling good. My body felt fine and during taper, I did a run on a cheap treadmill. I think that was the biggest mistake ever. My leg felt weird after that and my calf just wasn’t right. The week leading up to the race, I kept an eye on it but nothing really hurt….it just felt off. I ignore it and didn’t really think about it. During the marathon, I felt occasional pain and I had a hardcore limp after the race. I’m talking DAYS after the race. Long story short, I have a calf strain and I’m taking a break from running.
Remember how I was set on recovery and getting my routine down? Well, I planned on running a half marathon three weeks after Chicago and shooting for a PR. Without injury, I knew that I would have been able to bounce back and keep my speed. However. I have tried running a handful of times and my leg is just not having it. Instead of making it worse, I have made the decision to drop out of that race.
Now the DAV 5k is a great local race that supports such a great cause. I CAN walk and I know that in of itself is a huge blessing. Instead of running and shooting for a speedy time, I’m going to still participate in this race and walk in. I am going to walk in with the gratitude towards all those who have served our country. Just because I can’t run isn’t a reason to throw in the towel for this great race.
My limp is gone and I have been enjoying many leisurely walks with my pup. There’s been plenty of foam rolling, relaxing, and PT for my calf as well. Normally, I would have been so beat up by this but honestly, I kind of welcome the break. I have loved my walks around the neighborhood where I get to take in the sights. I’ve also been hitting the gym and focusing on upper body only. Being able to focus on the positive side of it will help me get through this. I can’t wait to participate in the DAV 5k in a few days!
