Tips To Add Distance

Good Morning Friends! I hope you had a wonderful week and you’re looking forward to a great weekend! It’s been a great one for me and I’m ready for a great weekend. Today we’re talking about going the distance. Are you at the beginning of your running journey and don’t know how to add miles? Here’s some tips to add distance to your runs!

Tips To Add Distance To Your Run

The key to add distance to your runs is to do so safely. Obviously, I wouldn’t recommend going from a 5k to a marathon plan in a short amount of time. Some people CAN do it but it’s just not advisable. When it comes to adding distance, I truly believe that slow and steady keeps you injury free. These three tips are super simple but they worked for me!

Add Distance To Your Runs: Do One More Lap

Whether you are simply running and walking at the track or around your neighborhood. Think about just going one more lap. Let’s say yesterday you did four laps at the track without stopping. Let’s aim for 5 today. Get comfortable with the 5 and then maybe add another in a few days. Honestly, that’s how I got to my first mile and it took the mental pressure off myself. If you run around your neighborhood, aim for an extra street or a further turn around point. By taking the math out of it, it can seem a bit easier.

Add Distance To Your Runs: Walk/Run Intervals

This is another simple way to add distance. By allowing your body to rest a bit during the walk intervals, you can build up the distance you go. Aim for 2:1 run to walk intervals. Allowing yourself a minute to catch your breath may help you reach farther and farther distances. Once you reach your goal distance, you can cut down the intervals!

Add Distance To Your Runs: Go For Time

One thing that helped me run farther distances was to run for a certain amount of time. Aiming for 30 or 40 minutes instead of a certain number of miles helped me get out of my head and eventually run longer. Part of the distance game is mental but with little tweaks like that, it can be easily achievable!

If you’ve been working on adding distance to your miles, I suggest that you give some or all of these tips a try. Sometimes, just changing up our mindset can help up make strides in our running goals!
