Summer Training Update!
It’s been a bit so I wanted to stop by and give you an update on my summer training! The blog has been a bit quiet because this summer has just been quite terrible in terms of the weather. Our plans of exploring the outdoors kind of came to a halt once we learned that this would be one of the hottest summers we’ve experienced in the south. It’s been pretty bad but like always, we just learn to roll with the punches. Here’s how my summer training has gone!
Summer Training: Running
My Garmin plan has helped me stay accountable when it comes to this. I have really enjoyed the make up of the plan and the fact that each run has a different objective. I run three days a week and with everything else I do, I think this is a good balance. Two of my weekly runs are outdoors so I have been running early before the sun comes up to avoid getting cooked. The humidity is usually terrible but I can handle that a bit better than dealing with the sun. I have opted to skip a few runs here and there but it’s mostly to listen to my body. My goal is to get to race day happy and healthy so some weeks I toned it down a bit and listened to my body.
Summer Training: CrossFit
If I had to give myself a grade for this, I would give myself a B. My strength training has gone well but I’ve flown a bit too close to the sun some days. I go to the early morning CrossFit class and again, I’m lucky to avoid the sun but I deal with the humidity. There have been a few workouts where I was not properly fueled or hydrated and it has impacted my performance. That usually means I feel terrible for the rest of the day and my body deals with this “hangover”. There was a weekend where I’m sure I did myself in because I went too hard on a Friday. This led to skipping a long run and laying in bed hydrating all day. This is mostly on me and I’ve learned how to read my body better. Now that I’m training for a race, knowing when to hold back has been key!
Summer Training: Accessory Work
This one makes me so sad. I bought a plyo box to work on some drills in my garage and help with my pull up progression. Want to know how many times I’ve been outside? Maybe 2. The heat makes the garage unbearable and as the sun is rising, it shines directly into my garage. No amount of fan or open doors does anything to fix it. As I don’t want to die of heat stroke, I’ve had to put those plans into the back seat. I don’t understand how people workout in their garage in the South. I’m not made for all that. Here’s hoping fall makes it more tolerable.
Overall, I’m happy with how my training is going. I’m proud that I’ve been able to stick to it and I can see improvement in all areas. My race is a few weeks away and I can’t wait to fine tune everything as race day gets closer!
