Reading Challenge!
Happy Friday friends! I hope you’re having a lovely day and I hope you had a great week. Mine has been busy but it’s been a good busy. Some weeks just seem to get away from you but this one has been productive to me. I wanted to pop in and share with you something that I am implementing in my own routine. Maybe it will inspire you to implement it as well! I’m doing a mini reading challenge for the next couple months!
It’s kind of embarrassing how little I read nowadays. When I was in school, I would read multiple books a week. It was so easy for me to get lost in books and I would always find new ones to dive into. However as I grew older, reading began to feel like a chore. It wasn’t until I received a free subscription to Wired that I began to really look forward to reading a real magazine or a real book. A coworker of mine reads on his phone and I was astounded at the size of his Kindle library!
How did we become a society so far removed from reading? Is it social media and being so connected with our phones? I’m not sure what it is but my goal for the rest of May and the month of June is to read at least 5 physical books. I do a daily reading from the Bible but I’m not counting that toward my 5 books. Hopefully you’ll join me as well! If physical books aren’t your thing, you can load up your Kindle and join me! Not quite sure how to find 5 books you’ll like to read? Check these tips out!
Tip #1 – Go to the library
When my husband and I first got married, we’d go to the local library to pick up movies to rent and the new arrivals section would catch my eye. Often times there was a good mystery book that I would pick up. Take a stroll in your local library and you may find something that stands out to you. Maybe there is even a “book of the month” you can check out!
Tip #2 – Short story collection
If long novels don’t seem interesting to you, why not check out a short story collection? I know Kindle has a few self published short story that are a fun read. If you’re looking for something new and don’t want to commit to a longer book, these are a great place to start!
Tip #3 – Learn a task/explore a subject
If you’re a visual learner, you may struggle with this. However, I like to learn by reading. Often there will be a task or a certain subject that I am curious about. I’ll try to find books about this. It’s easy to get sucked into a book when it’s something you are curious about. True story: there was a time where I was so utterly obsessed with the atom bomb and the science behind it that I read these super thick books about New Mexico and the Manhattan Project. My husband’s eye glazed over but because it was something I was interested in, the books were an easy read to me!
Why not join me for this reading challenge? View it as taking time out of your day to immerse yourself in something you enjoy. Once you get into the habit of it, you may realize that it truly is something you enjoy!
