Homemade Hummus!

Homemade Hummus

Happy Friday! You’ve made it through the week and that is more than enough reason to celebrate. Now I don’t know how your week has been but I do hope that today’s post gives you something to look forward to. Today we’re talking about homemade hummus! It took some time for me to become a fan of hummus but now I cannot get enough! You’ll usually find me eating it as an afternoon snack with some carrots, cucumber, or bell peppers.

So, What Is Hummus?

Hummus is basically a healthier dip. While it’s often seen on health food blogs, it’s more traditionally thought of as part of Mediterranean cuisine. It is made with chickpeas and very little else. While it’s not a “low calorie” dip, it’s got plenty of protein and healthy fats and it’s very easy to make at home!

How To Make Homemade Hummus

The main ingredients you need for hummus is chickpeas, garlic cloves, and spices. You can actually substitute some of the spices for sesame paste or tahini. The combinations are endless. If you go to the grocery store, you know that there are different hummus flavors so you can also mix in other veggies and spices to add flavor. I made a beet hummus over the weekend and I’m obsessed. Here’s a quick recipe for a batch of hummus.

  • 1 can chickpeas, drained (save 1/4 cup of canned liquid)
  • garlic clove
  • 1/2 tsp cardamom
  • tsp cumin
  • tsp olive oil
  • Pinch of salt

Combine all ingredients in a food processor (or high power blender) and blend until smooth!

If you have a regular blender, you can still make hummus but you may have to add ingredients slowly. I’ve also noticed that while it’s all blended together, my hummus isn’t as smooth as that of a high power blender. It still tastes good so I would give it a try! This is one of many ways to make hummus. You can even add a bit of olive oil and change up the spices to get a different taste!
