Healthy Food Substitutions!

When it comes to eating healthy, it can be hard switching over. Most people think that you need a complete overhaul of your diet and that’s just not true! Making many healthy food substitutions throughout your day can add up!

Carb substitutions

I mean really, need I say more?

Substitutions While Cooking

Depending on what you are cooking, these tips are super easy to follow and can help cut out junk from your diet:

Mayo substitutions

Getting ready to whip up some apple chicken salad!

Swapping out Greek Yogurt for Mayo

When you’re making yummy egg or chicken salad, Greek yogurt is an excellent substitution for mayonnaise. If you are watching your cholesterol or want to reduce the fat content of your meal, this is the way to go! The texture is the practically the same and the flavor of the yogurt will not overpower your recipe. Mayo has not made an appearance in my kitchen in YEARS.

Baking Instead of Frying

When people used to tell me this, I would think they were out of their mind. Like, who deep fries stuff at home right? Well, this includes pan frying! Sometimes when you cook stuff on the stove, you may be inadvertently drowning your food in butter and up goes the cholesterol and fat content again! I love throwing veggies and a protein on a baking sheet with a little bit of coconut oil and throwing it in the oven! By using this method, you can still create delicious and flavorful dishes while staying mindful of how it’s being prepared.

Substitutions For Snacks

Snacks are usually what I want after a crazy day. I can eat well all day but I really want to keep my snacks in line so I don’t have a billion cavities!

Soda substitutions

Drinking Kombucha Instead Of Soda

Hear me out here. I know that Kombucha is definitely an acquired taste and can be scary if you’ve never tried it. It’s basically a fermented probiotic drink which is usually sweetened with natural sugars. These drinks are fizzy and some of them taste pretty close to the popular sodas out there. There’s nothing wrong with indulging every once in a while, but why not get the fizz AND probiotics while you can?

Flavored Air Popped Popcorn

Popcorn can be a nice healthy snack or you could drown it in butter and eat the whole tub (guilty!). A good way to keep it healthy is to air pop it at home. If you don’t have an air popper, you can get the microwave popcorn that is plain and add your toppings. A delicious way to eat popcorn is with some cinnamon and dark chocolate chips mixed in. This way you get the crunch of the popcorn and still a bit of sweetness mixed in!

I hope you can use these tips and be inspired to make healthy substitutions in your day. By keeping your eyes open, you’ll start to notice healthier ways to cook your favorite meals AND still keep them flavorful. Stay tuned for more tips on this later this month!
